THE MODERN MINT BLOG
Through the European Boxwood and Topiary Society I worked with Chris Poole and Sue Mesher, members of the EBTS board, and we set up a Boxwood Growers Forum.
This was to discuss how to make sure this wonderful topiary plant stays in the public conscioussness – we know many growers, suppliers and distributors have stopped selling it as the cost of replacing boxwood that has blight, or is nibbled by the boxwood caterpillar, makes it unviable to offer to clients and gardeners.
But Boxwood is a phoenix plant, and there are ways to deal with the problems associated with Buxus. Simple solutions too! But we set up the discussion to get a clearer idea of how people felt about it, and what help would be needed to ensure it is part of our gardens – especially as Buxus is such a generous plant, a British native and a heritage tree of European gardens.
If you have any thoughts on Boxwood and how we can improve attitudes towards its planting in gardens, do get in touch with the EBTS – info@ebts.org – you can also find out much more about Boxwood on the website… to navigate some of those problems with caterpillar and blight!
And if you need help with your topiary…
Buxus the Norfolk Terrier In Modern Topiary Book

And what seems amazing to me, is that not only have people actually been reading it, but then responding to it. So below are a number of comments I have been sent from those who read it last night, and this morning…. “Brilliant read, exactly the right amount of info to take in and digest.” Rachel, a gardener “Just finished reading – absolutely brilliant!” Camilla (she shared with me lots she highlighted) …
Modern Topiary Book
Over the last six years I have been writing a book. It is called Modern Topiary and I have finally finished it, and now made it available for people to read. This is the blurb on the back…. This is the topiary book I wish I had when I began trying to clip plants into a shape others would consider beautiful. Split into two parts – the craft and then the art of topiary – I have tried to share everything I know. It’s not a long book. I hope this gives you the foundation for good technique, alongside ideas …
